Are Tattoos Safe for You?

A few words about tattoos safety

, Are Tattoos Safe for You?

Tattoos are becoming more popular lately. This is mostly due to the fact that tattoos offer a permanent, beautiful way for an individual to show his or her personality off. However, there are still many questions surrounding the safety of tattoos. Here are some of the frequently asked questions about inks and tattoos safety:

Are tattoos painful? Tattoos are by no means painful, but if you get an infection you can experience severe discomfort, either from scratching the area or injecting an anti-biotic cream into the area. You could also experience a fever, rash or other type of discomfort. You should be aware of the possibility of scarring as well. Scarring occurs where the skin tissue is exposed to a foreign substance, such as an MRI for an example. Scratching or touching a tattoo can lead to significant damage to the area, which can then lead to permanent scarring.

What are the health risks involved with tattooing? Tattooing is a process which involves injecting pigment into the skin, creating a design on the surface of the skin. While it is true that tattooing can be quite painful and can even result in allergic reactions in some individuals, the health risks generally associated with tattooing far outweigh any pain you may feel at the time of getting your tattoo. There are tattoo shops that are specifically set up to provide safe, sterile environments for tattooing, as well as providing information to tattoo clients about the health risks involved. Tattoo artists are also well trained in providing information and in treating any skin disorders that may occur as a result of tattooing.

What are the side effects of tattoo inks? Unfortunately there are some possible side effects to using tattoo inks – both from the tattoo ink itself and from the chemicals used to treat it. When tattoo inks are made with pigments that have high concentrations of heavy metals such as lead, mercury or arsenic, or when the pigments have been mixed with prescription drugs or over-the-counter medications that contain heavy metals, it is possible to have a reaction to these ingredients. Heavy metals are known to cause several different kinds of cancers, and over-using tattoo inks that have been mixed with prescription medications have been known to cause depression and behavioral problems among those who take the prescribed drugs.

If you are thinking about getting a tattoo, or if you are thinking about wearing one, you should thoroughly research the tattoo parlor or tattoo artist you will be using before getting any tattoos. Make sure you have a written agreement with your tattoo parlor, or tattoo artist, to clearly describe what is not covered by your contract. You should also find out what the policy is regarding tattoo pigments containing lead, mercury or other metals. It is not enough to assume that the tattoo shop or artist will be careful – it’s a good idea to find out beforehand. If you’re having allergic reactions to heavy metals, or other side effects such as depression, behavioral problems or infections, you may have a case that requires medical attention.
